Scariest Horror Novels and Short Stories

Stephen King – One For The Road

One For The Road is just a short story, but it is so scary that we can’t possibly leave it out of this list. A couple of men meet in a bar and discuss the legend of the vampires in and around the nearby village of Salem’s Lot. One For The Road is without any doubt Stephen King’s scariest story and can be found in the collection Night Shift.

Vanessa Morgan – Drowned Sorrow

Drowned Sorrow by Vanessa Morgan is the scariest novel of the year. Drowned Sorrow has an extremely creepy atmosphere, an strange village where the inhabitants drink nothing but water, a mysterious sect, and a lake with half-dead people in it. A mother and her teenage daughter visit the village and it is unsure if they will ever be able to get out again. It’s no wonder that this new horror author has been called the female version of Stephen King.

Best Vampire Novels

What is this fascination that people have with the undead?  From Mummies, to Zombies, to Vampires, there seem to be a never ending production of movies and books about them.

Currently I have a fixation for anything vampire, be it books, movies or games. Usually I prefer to watch horror movies rather than read about them, so it was not until I was absolutely bored that I picked up the “Twilight Novels” (author Stephanie Meyers) to read. Now keep in mind, I read the Twilight Saga after the movie came out, so prior to reading the books I had not even seen the movie. I could not understand the phenomenon it created. Sure, I had seen the trailers and endless media coverage of the movie but I just chalked it up to being another teeny bopper movie. It was not until reading the books that I understood what the whole hype was about. This is going to make me cringe a bit (because I would hate to be among the many teenage crazed fans) but after reading those books I too became a fan. I must say it is one of the best novels I have read so far.

The first book gave entrance to a brilliant beginning. The idea of a human girl falling in love with a vampire was a tell tale story of two opposites coming together for love despite their differences and the trials that accompany such a union. I think that is what I really liked about those books. It had everything, romance, humor, drama and suspense all the ingredients for a well written book. What I did not like about the Saga was the second book, New Moon. Do not get me wrong it was not a bad book. I just did not like how Bella reacted to Edward leaving her. The fact that she was in a zombie like state at first then jumping off of cliffs sort of screamed to me suicide. It just seemed pathetic. Other than that part of the book, I loved the rest.

Around the same time that twilight came out, the HBO series “True Blood” came out. Just like Twilight the movie, True Blood also originated from a series of books, The Sookie Stackhouse Novels (author Charlaine Harris). It even has a similar plot to Twilight, you know, girl meets vampire, girl falls in love with vampire and so on. The nice twist about this story is that the girl (Sookie) is a telepath who can read people’s mind except for vampires and the vampires roam free among people. While Twilight had a more teenage audience, the Sookie Stackhouse books is more adult oriented. The books are not as well written as the previous book I talked about but it does have a good story base and the television series is even better.
