Finding Great Science Fiction Books

So many books are published each week that is often hard to decide which books to read. If you are like me, I read about 500 books a year (yes I said 500). You may already have a number of authors that you follow and they may or may not put out enough material for you to keep up with. I follow about 43 authors and they cannot keep up with me.

The artwork on a book is designed to catch your attention. If the artwork gets you to pick up the book, the chances of you reading the synopsis go way up. If it sounds good, you may decide to purchase the book. If you do, the book people have completed their task successfully. However, you should consider books that don’t always have artwork that catches your attention. Picking up a book at random can prove to be a great way to discover a new author and a great literary piece of work. Many times, I have randomly selected a book, read the description, and then made a purchase.

If you are looking to save money (and who isn’t), but still enjoy great books, consider the used bookstore. Used books are great for people who love to read or are looking for something new that won’t cost them a lot of money. When you finish the book, you can trade it back in and get some credit towards another book. Although if you love science fiction as I do, you will find that, most science fiction fans do not trade in their science fiction books.

Top Tips For Scifi, Fantasy Booklovers

Ever since I was a young fellow I have had a passion for the scifi and fantasy book genre both the reading of and the collecting. Unfortunately book stores and newsagents never seemed to have anything but best sellers or factory seconds. So I learnt how to hunt out the best places for my fix and I would like to share these tips with you all, please note these tips are aimed at the to be collectors but casual readers should also enjoy the information.

Tip 1 For beginners to collecting a great way to start out is by visiting second hand bookstores as they have low prices and often an ok selection. The main problem with second hand stores is that the books are often well used and quite often they have the stores stamp inside so that you don’t re-trade it. Overall for collectors I rate them 3/10.

Tip 2 For the budget conscious take the time to check out local garage sales for new authors or titles you haven’t had the pleasure to read. This option often has low quality books and often it’s impossible to get full sets but on rare occasions there is a diamond in the rough. A great example of this was a few years back I bought a whole box of old scifi novels for $5 and ended up finding a first edition Edgar Rice Burroughs, A Princess of Mars in the bottom which is displayed proudly in my collection. Overall for collectors I rate garage sale between 3 and 7/10.

The Greatest Comical Science Fiction Books

If you think science fiction books are not your cup of tea, then please think again and read this article. Among the myriad science fiction novels written, most of them are not worth remembering or even reading. But a few of them will stay in our collective memories as genial works of literature. Maybe one day science fiction will receive as much credentials as “normal” literature.

Amid the best SF books available, there is a genre which draws my attention. This genre is comical SF. Humor is a virtue that touches everybody. According to philosopher Henri Bergson, laughing is the only quality that distinguishes humans from animals. As humor has a universal appeal, one may not especially enjoy science fiction stories, but might well enjoy these very funny and immensely genial masterworks.

Many science fiction authors have a talent for humor. Among those we can mention Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Kurt Vonnegut (if you consider him a SF writer). These authors have an easy prose filled with witty protagonists. But some science fiction books stand out for their comical genius.
